Volt Berlin is a novel concept for a retail and leisure center near the Alexander Platz in Berlin. The experience cluster is a fusion concept of multi-brand stores, themed activities, events and hotels aimed at experience-seeking visitors with a focus on the "smart urban lifestyle". The large urban complex is divided into several smaller offset cubes with exposed concrete facades and storey-high glazing according to its planned use. A defining feature is the horizontal glazed joint which can be illuminated in different colours through the use of special foils. The challenging thermal and acoustic demands due to the mixed use of the building are taken into account by precise design and coordination of the facade details. The surf hall area can be generously opened up by means of a 10m high folding door structure and a hydraulically operated movable pneumatic roof.
