1st Prize - Bridge 'Franklin Steg'

01.10.2020

With the new Franklin-Bridge MWSP is setting new standards in the field of sustainable constructions for the city of Mannheim. The integral timber bridge, that is planned to be the essential catalyst in connecting the city’s quarters Columbus and Vogelstang, consists of two regularly coupled glue laminated timber beams and a carbon concrete slab, that spans in between the timber beams with a minimized thickness.

The use of renewable timber and material efficient carbon concrete results in a construction that minimizes carbon emissions to around 40% of a conventional bridge structure with low need for maintenance and high durability. The competition entry by Knippers Helbig and DKFS was awarded by the jury with a first prize.
