knippershelbig is an engineering firm which operates domestically and internationally and employs nearly 95 people in Stuttgart, New York and Berlin. With a great passion for innovation, we draft, design and realize diverse building projects of any size and complexity in the fields of structural and facade engineering- from childcare centers, residential and office buildings to museums, stadiums, bridges to airports.

We act as creative partners in interdisciplinary planning teams and maintain close communication with our clients and planning partners, from the first project sketch to project completion. The contest of ideas within the development of architectural solutions is an essential part of our planning culture and the dedication to this principle guides our approach to engineering.

For over 20 years, we have been providing engineering services in structural design, from conventional building structures and multi-story timber constructions to bridges, light-weight structures and experimental pilot projects. In facade engineering, we develop both innovative special designs and economically efficient building envelopes, meeting in all cases highly aesthetic and energy efficient solutions. In addition to our activities on behalf of building owners and architects we also support specialized contractors in the conceptual development, engineering, analysis and specification of technically or geometrically complex building tasks.

When working on these projects, we commonly use digital design, analysis, and presentation methods. We develop all building construction projects using smart three-dimensional building models (BIM) in a continuous planning process across all service phases.

We are pioneers in emission- and resource-efficient planning and construction. For over ten years, we have been accompanying our projects with life cycle analyses and are also active in the fields of materials research and development. Together with leading universities, we are constantly developing special planning tools and benchmarks for zero-emission building and pave the way for the application of cycle-friendly building materials and construction methods.

With the aim of promoting holistic sustainable solutions in the building sector, we are also involved in teaching activities and professional associations and supporting associations at both a national and international level. For us, the transparent exchange of expertise and dialog with professionals and other colleagues is essential. For this reason, we launched a regular open meeting series, the Stuttgarter Nachhaltigkeitsstammtisch in 2020.

The engineering firm knippershelbig was founded in 2001 by Prof. Thorsten Helbig and Prof. Jan Knippers. Today, the offices in Stuttgart, New York and Berlin are run by the managing directors Prof. Thorsten Helbig, Dr. Matthias Oppe and Roman Schieber and are managed together with Florian Meier and Laurent Giampellegrini at the respective locations.
