Knippers Helbig, together with Behnisch Architekten, has been selected for a full scope of structural and façade development works. The resulting façade of the AFH EpiCenter Expansion provides shading and natural ventilation, controls and enhances interior daylight conditions, and creates strong visual connections. The facade also contributes to the building’s own energy production. Its tight thermal envelope, with its R-30 walls and roof, and Aerogel Facade Panels is a key element to the building’s ability to achieve Energy Positive (E+) status.

The high-performing façade is paired with the efficient and sustainable structural system. The eight-storey steel superstructure of the AFH EpiCenter Expansion, with overhangs reaching up to 23 feet, together with composite decks offers a cost-effective solution and a minimal impact to the existing structure. With the sustainable building’s life cycle in mind, the lightweight nature of the structure and the reusability of materials used yield together a minimal carbon footprint, in line with the Energy Positive status of the building.
