knippershelbig, in cooperation with the architects gmp, , designed a new bridge over Baakenhafen dock in Hamburg's HafenCity district. The project represents an important component in the development of the Baakenhafen district with 2,200 planned residential units and 5,000 jobs. The construction serves not only as a means of access to Baakenhafen, but additionally supplying the district with necessary energy sources and media. Completed in 2019, it was therefore an integral part of the urban development. The steel bridge structure with a span of 67 m and a clear width of 6.1 m was constructed as a half-through trough-bridge with its height increasing towards midspan. This allows for 35 pipes to be integrated invisibly under the bridge. The welded steel construction, despite its weight of 280 tons, appears light and elegant due to the geometric design approach of the “folded” sidewalls.
