The city of Ludwigsburg is Germany's most sustainable city of medium size (awarded the German Sustainability Award 2014).
Translucence, lightness, a clear and simple style, as well as the "warmth" of the material and the resulting high quality of stay quality and sustainability as well as static efficiency are the essential qualities of the design. In the interdisciplinary field of tension between urban planning (pp) as well as infrastructurer architecturer and structural design (KH), a suitable shield construction made of wood was developed for the location. It consists of spokes in wood construction with a projection of up to 15m, which rests on steel columns. The roofing is done by means of translucent photovoltaic elements and allows a high daylight quality under the roof. The interconnected wooden umbrellas are supporting each other by the staggered position of the steel columns. Wood sequesters CO2, so increasing the wood mass is a significant contribution to the sustainability of the structure. More (wood) is less (CO2)!
