GS Caltex Pavilion Expo
The pavilion reflects the innovative approach of GS Caltex exploring new energy to spearhead a green future and foster new growth drives to become energy leader in the Asia-Pacific region.
Surrounded by 380 18m tall, illuminated artificial blades the prismatic pavilion is located within an energy field. The blades are to sway in the wind much like grass is moved by a breeze, transforming natural energy into movement.
The main challenge to overcome with the design of the blades was to develop a concept that allows for a swaying motion of the blades under service wind speeds whilst ensuring adequate strength under typhoon.
Different approaches have been investigated, requirements are fulfilled by tapered glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) poles with a laminate thickness of 4mm. Elements fabricated within winding process narrow from a 220mm diameter at their base to 65mm. LED chains located on the inside illuminate the blades during night times, emphasizing their motional appearance.
