Urban cable cars are an innovative contribution to public transport systems. The IJbaan Cable Car in Amsterdam consists of three pylons and two stations and connects NDSM Marina on the North Bank and Minervahaven to the south, spanning across the western harbor area with a length of 1.5km. In the future, the route can be flexibly extended with additional stations.
To allow ships to pass along the IJ waterway the towers are up to 136m high.
Design and construction of pylons and stations are significant factors for the success of cable car projects, and so the structural optimization includes aspects of serviceability, material consumption, assembly and local impact in close collaboration with the designers from early planning stages.
The pylons are composed of welded hollow sections tapering to become more slender as they rise, with several individual columns meeting at a height of about one-third.
