Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge Hafencity
Knippers Helbig, in cooperation with the architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners, won first prize in a design competition for the construction of a pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Baakenhafen in Hamburg's HafenCity district. The project represents an important component in the development of the Baakenhafen district with 1,700 planned residential units and 5,000 jobs. The construction serves not only as a means of access over the Baakenhafen, but additionally fulfills logistical function of exclusively supplying the district with necessary energy and media sources. Completion in 2017 is therefore an integral part of the urban development. The structure with a span of 61m was devised as a column-free steel construction, which appears as a trough-like beam with its height increasing towards the center. This allows for 35 pipes to be hidden under the bridge. The welded steel construction, despite its weight of 160 tonnes, appears light and elegant due to the geometric design which resemble "folds".
