An innovative market and construction principle for the supermarket of the future

Project

The Wiesbaden REWE is a prototype for a new and sustainable market concept that can be adapted conceptually and constructively to any location typology. A sustainable wooden structure spans the sales areas, where locally grown and prepared products are openly displayed. The production processes of food are made visible and celebrated. An aquaponics farm is integrated into the market functions. The fish farming is located on a mezzanine floor, and the cultivation of basil takes place in a modular greenhouse on the roof of the market.

The vault-like geometry of the column heads as a main construction element

Structure
The glued laminated timber columns support a ceiling construction made of stacked wooden beams and a solid wooden plate. The primary structure of the column head is created by stacking 12 layers of glued laminated timber beams on top of each other at the intersection points. Another layer connects the column heads of the roof structure together. Due to the column head geometry, the span of the roof construction is shortened. The earthbound components of the foundation and the functional areas of the service boxes were built in reinforced concrete construction.

sustainability
The structure is designed to be modular, easy to build, and flexible to respond to market sizes, locations, and configurations. The focus is on many simple, standardized wooden elements that are joined together using self-tapping screws. This turns the building into a material store, with the goal of fully reusing the elements at the end of their lifecycle ("end of life" phase).
